By learning from these common missteps, you’ll be better equipped to build a thriving and sustainable photography career.

Mistakes :

1. Wrong Investments

This thought definitely comes in every beginner’s mind that to become a good photographer, I do need very expensive cameras and gears, otherwise my career will remain stunted. This is absolutely wrong, I myself have known many people who are doing commercial shoots with basic DSLR. You must have basic gears like a decent camera and lens, speedlight and a laptop/tab are more than enough for a good start. Where to invest then? You should initially invest in learning and practice such as a digital professional courses/photography books and institutions(not compulsory). After a few days, you should start investing in test shoots, in which you will produce the shoot to build your portfolio. All these investments are more rewarding for your business rather than investing in expensive equipment, the rest of the equipment can be easily rented.

2. Poor Pitching

We have talked before about pitching and how it is the cheapest yet most effective tool to boost your photography career. But millions of photographers will be doing cold mail the way you do, and your prospects will be getting thousand mails daily ,So chances of getting your pitch noticed is very less if it is not impactful enough. Pitching tips – You have to be very clear about your offers and differentiator point or unique selling point. If this is not there then your pitch will remain mediocre. In your pitch, explain what the prospect’s current shortcomings are and how you can fix them.Try to convince them by playing with emotions like when you will let them know their weakness or important changes it will clear feeling of fear or pain and then with your personalised offer youcan leave them with feeling of urgency to solve the problem.

3. No Marketing

Effective marketing is crucial for photography businesses to reach the right audience and achieve success. Poor marketing can limit growth potential and lead to inconsistent and unpredictable client acquisition. Lack of visibility can result in missed opportunities to showcase skills, and poor marketing can lead to clients undervaluing your work or choosing competitors with better presentations. On the other hand, good marketing can transform your business by increasing visibility, positioning you as an expert in your niche, and effectively communicating your unique selling points. This attracts clients who appreciate your style, are willing to pay for your services, and can potentially lead to long-term business relationships.

4. Sick Branding

Branding is crucial for photographers as it creates a distinct identity that resonates with their target audience, helping them stand out in a saturated market. It fosters trust and loyalty among clients, creating an emotional connection that makes them more likely to choose their services. Consistent branding across all platforms, such as website, social media, and promotional materials, reinforces the professional image and ensures a memorable business. This not only attracts clients but also turns them into advocates who will refer the business to others, driving sustained growth for the business.

5. Over Editing

Every beginner makes this mistake, editing is a very vast topic and dynamic skill to learn. Over editing can spoil a good professional shoot. So it would be better if you watch videos of online editing/retouching fashion images and learn because this skill is equally important in your photography journey and especially in the initial stage of doing it.

6. Not Networking and Finding ideal Client

This may be a bit harsh truth but in India you will get more work quickly from networking compared to other methods. Because the people here trust referrals a lot and they think a lot and want to invest their money then, if their close friend or people refer the photographer to them then they can trust easily. But if your work is really top class. Then you are out of this category, ultimately your skills matter. But still you can make networking an important part of your business growth. You should network with ideal people who will understand your work or who might need your work.

7. Absence Of Legalities

Legal documents are crucial in the fashion photography business for protecting intellectual property, defining work scope, limiting liability, ensuring compliance with laws, clarifying payment terms, managing client expectations, securing long-term relationships, and handling confidentiality and privacy. Without them, potential legal disputes, financial losses, damaged reputation, and strained client relationships can occur, potentially hindering business growth and expansion. Proper documentation is essential for maintaining a professional and ethical business environment.

8. Not Learning

If someone asked me what’s one reason if one’s photography business fails then it would be to stopping learning. Lack of learning leads to lack of inspiration and it leads to lack of action so you can think how important it is. The foundation of successful business is to always keep learning. Secondly, if you stop learning then you will always remain a failure in the mediocre market because you will have to learn a lot to reach the industry level. In fact photography is all about continuous learning and growing, even after you are successful to sustain your career. Because there are always frequent changes in this industry for example , Artificial intelligence has brought massive changes in this industry.

9. Pricing

There is confusion among all the beginning photographers regarding pricing, so I have taken this factor into consideration while starting out. Wrong pricing can stop the growth of your business. To start a fashion photography business, research competitors, consider client types, factor in costs, set rates, consider value-based pricing, offer discounted rates, and build a portfolio. Consider contracts and terms, including a deposit and clear terms. Adjust rates gradually as experience and portfolio build, and seek client feedback to understand your value.

10. Fear of Failure

This is not only in photography but it is done before starting any business, which is a big reason why 90% people are not able to take their business forward. It is very important to have a growth mindset to do something out of the box . And it takes 5x more hard work to establish one’s business than someone else’s. Therefore, it is very important to be a mentally strong person for which you should read books, watch YouTube psychological videos and do meditations and all.

Conclusion

Remember, success in the photography industry requires not just artistic talent but also a keen business sense. By avoiding these mistakes, you’ll be better equipped to build a sustainable and profitable photography business that allows your creative vision to thrive. Keep learning, stay adaptable, and always prioritize both your craft and your clients.
